Bridge the Article Marketing Gap - Reconciling Two Theories of Article Marketing

Article marketing should be an energetic and highly utilized part of any web-business strategy. The two primary ideologies of article distribution - wide array mass-distribution versus focused, small-scale distribution - seem at first to be irreconcilable. However, bringing the two methods together can multiply web traffic by exploiting the best aspects of each, so you can have your cake and eat it, too.
Conservative Distribution Theory
Recently, the most widely accepted theory of article marketing has been to use a focused technique of distributing articles to a handful of quality article directories. The primary reason this method became popular was that search engines began downgrading or penalizing websites that consisted of duplicate content. The search engines had good reason for that. It is not fair to rank cut-and-paste content the same as content created by the hand and mind of dedicated, interested people. The down side of that change of policy is that those of us who wanted to spread our homemade articles out to numerous sources found that our hard work was suddenly viewed less positively. The result was that the good, ethical article marketers set to work writing more articles and distributing them to ten or fifteen highly ranked article directories, while the black-hat guys searched for new dastardly schemes.
The benefits of the new rules were twofold:
1) Instead of spreading a few articles over a very wide area, we were creating more articles on our topics, which helped to bolster our image as experts in our field. Even if we got a bit less traffic, the traffic we did get was of a much higher quality.
2) Submitting to fewer directories meant that we could focus on getting our articles into the proper categories on the higher tier article directories. Once again, this seemed to result in better traffic.
Liberal Distribution Theory
This technique evolved quite naturally from the early days of internet marketing. As soon as we were capable, of course we submitted our articles to as many directories as possible. The more links we had floating out there, the more traffic we received. Much of that traffic was of lower quality, but that was not as important. As long as our servers could take it, we wanted it.
The benefits of the old way were, coincidentally, also twofold:
1) We were able to cast a much wider net. We could throw out the garbage and the small fish, and we kept only the fish we wanted. (I know it is a hackneyed metaphor, but it is true.)
2) With the advent of automated mass-distribution technology, we could get our message and our links out there with one click of the mouse. Maybe our articles were not always placed in the best category, but there were so many instances of our work on the internet that it did not drastically affect our results.
Then, in a story that seems to keep repeating itself, the spammers ruined it for everyone. Of course, they only ruined the easiness of article marketing, not the effectiveness. I must reiterate that these conditions forced us to work harder, which led to our increased knowledge, which then led to our being even better in our niches. Take that, spammers.
The New, Centrist Distribution Theory
Very simply, this is a combination of the two previously described theories. This method was created because although search engines downgrade duplicate content, they do not discount it entirely. If an article marketer today were to use mass-distribution alone, his work would not draw traffic to the level it would have a few years ago. However, his net would still be cast wide, with little effort required after writing the article.
It is now becoming clear that these two techniques can coexist. The trick is to find the right blend.
Some very successful article marketers use mass-distribution services for ten to thirty percent of the articles they write. The rest are submitted by hand (though there are software programs that can simplify this process) to specific categories in article directories that publish high quality, original content. This gives them two nets - one wide net and one deep net. They get long-lasting backlinks that bring them targeted traffic from the manual submissions, and they get volume from the mass-distribution.
The last remaining task is one that never actually ends. Successful article marketers never stop experimenting with which articles to mass-distribute, and with how many to mass-distribute. Start your campaign today, and watch your traffic skyrocket in a few short months.

If you are looking for an immediate increase in your website traffic, and you don t want to shell out a lot of money for pay-per-click search engines, I ll let you in on a secret that has helped me make many sales and build large lists very quickly with zero cash up-front: it s called "OPT" (Other People s Traffic).
Other website operators have the targeted website visitors you need right now - you just have to convince them to funnel some of it your way. Your mission is to find people who can refer you their traffic either for a percentage of the sale, a flat fee, a trade for services, or on a per-click basis.
NOTE: I prefer to pay people a big percentage of the sale - as much as 50% - because it has the lowest risk for me as the merchant. I only pay when a sale is made and, therefore, I make it well worth someone s while to work with me. That s the whole idea behind a successful affiliate program.
The quickest way to find people who can refer you traffic is to take inventory of whom you know. Who operates a site drawing the type of visitors you need?

Endorsed mailings are by far the best way to funnel traffic from another site. A well-written endorsement letter by a website operator who already has a relationship with people who can buy from you is often worth its weight in gold. An effective endorsed mailing can result in traffic, sales, and money in your pocket within just a few hours of sending it.
2. Pop-Up Windows
Focused "pop-up" windows represent the next fastest way to funnel traffic to your site. When used incorrectly, pop-up windows create an annoying distraction for web surfers. Make sure your pop-up windows are relevant to exactly what visitors came to your site for in the first place!

Online Shoppers Say They ll Buy from Small and Large E-Businesses Alike

As the holiday shopping season begins in earnest, consumers say they are very willing to buy from small online retailers as they are from large, national e-commerce providers.

In beyond this key finding, a new national survey of 2500 consumers found Extremely high levels of consumer participation in - and satisfaction with - shopping on the Internet, despite continuing concerns about security and privacy.

Selecting a Web Content Management Product

So you want to take a look at a real Web Content Management (WCM) product. How do you go about evaluating all the different products and vendors? What should you be looking for in a WCM package? Is it better to build your own, buy or use Open Source?

The best way to answer this question is to compare the products on an apples to apples basis. You can do this objectively by building a product evaluation matrix based upon your specific needs. The first column can list out the functionality categories (e.g. Security). The second column can be the specific needs (e.g. integrates with Active Directory for roles and authorization) under each of the categories. The next columns would be your products, one per column for each product you want to consider. For each product then you would give a rating (1 to 10 scale) on each specific need.

You can then add a column for weighting each specific need, or do this at the topic level. For example, flexible workflow may be much more important to you than your ability to customize the presentation. You can then add some more columns to calculate the weighting against the rating to arrive at a realistic assessment number for each product on each of your organization s specific needs. Sum these all up per product to arrive at a total product assessment score.

Of course, you can t forget to check customer references, or if it s an open source product, go dig around some sites which are using the tool already.

Below is a list of some topics/specific needs which may apply for you. At a minimum, these should provoke some thought on your part as far as what you are looking for in a WCM product and give you a good start on your product evaluation matrix.

Workflow Support for multiple workflow models? Complex workflows (parallel and serial)? Role/Group integration with flows? Ability to create workflow templates for re-use with different content types?

Security Will the product integrate with your security architecture? Do you require security for content submission? Do you require security for content consumption? Is there support for roles and groups? How is this implemented and managed in the product?

Content submission What are the creation/submission vehicles e.g., via an Office application, HTML/File upload, WYSIWYG, etc. Are there templates to force content managers to adhere to a common content structure (e.g. all posts must have a title, sub-title, body, and who to contact fields)

Presentation customization Extensive presentation customization capabilities? Extensive support for CSS integration? Ability to create presentation templates which can then be re-used for different content types? End-user creation of presentation templates or does it require a developer?

Integration with search Does the product provide its own search engine? Or, will it effectively integrate with your current (or planned search engine)? Security integration with search (i.e. a user can only see search results for what he/she has access to view)

Architecture If your organization uses Web Services or has an established Service Oriented Architecture, you may demand the product can expose content through Web Services so other applications can present content. This morning, the Internet connected me to my friends, although today the News was mostly bad. Firstly, some friends of mine and I are planning to get together tomorrow and I was figuring out what time to meet. I emailed my friends at ten twenty two am, to say Let s meet at six pm . At ten thirty five am, one of them emailed me back that he d been downsized, and so could make it as early as we liked. I emailed my condolences, glad for the speed and ease when connecting with my friends via the Internet. His email at quarter to nine am said nothing about being downsized so he must only have found out about it this morning, less than two hours before he told us.
Before telephones and computers came to be, swift communication would have been reserved for only those who could afford to send letters to each other and employ messenger boys. Although on the other hand, before England had telephones I gather the mail service was so efficient that you could send an invitation at breakfast, and expect a letter in response the same day. Even that doesn t compare with getting an answer in thirteen minutes, and learning about major events in a friend s life in less than two hours.
After receiving that bad News, and then my small consolation of joy at being so connected to my friends, I read more bad News in another friend s blog and discovered that I m less connected than I thought. My blogger friend is worried he suffers from depression and might be an alcoholic. According to his blog he can t talk to his friends about it, including me. I wonder if he knows that some of his friends read his blog. Like most blog pages this one allows comments so I anonymously offered some advice and encouraged him to talk to his friends. I m curious if what I said will give away who I am. Later on I had a discussion about him and his blog with another friend over a messenger program.
Sadly the world is both kind and cruel, filled with both joy and sorrow. So, if you can connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime, you will get bad News as quickly and clearly as you get good News. Although you will, I hope, always get good News more often.

Like most Internet entrepreneurs are now, years ago I was very eager to make money and rapid progress in everything that I did. I didn t want to take time to read anything, ask questions or think things through. I had no time for that. I just wanted to make money and to make it fast. I did everything quickly. I talked fast. I read fast. I made decisions fast.
While consulting with an important client one day, I had a career changing experience that "lives" with me even now.
As I arrived at my client s office to make my masterful presentation on how I could make more money for him, I was surprised to discover an extra attendee. My client s father (looked to be in his 70 s at the time) was to be part of the meeting. I wondered a second as to why his father was there, but I jumped into my presentation anyway. And, I was brilliant at it. Or so I thought.
However, at the end of my presentation, I was surprised to see my client turn to his father and say, "Dad, what do you think about all of this?" The old man changed my entire life. Here is what he said to his son... He said, "Son, if YOU yourself don t know where you are going... how will you know when you get there?"
Before his son could answer, he said... "If you have never seen a certain place before, how can you be sure you will recognize it if you went there?" And thirdly, he added... "And most of all, if you are that ignorant as to where you want to go, you had better be darn sure of who you decide to follow!"
I was stunned and trapped. I couldn t begin an argument with the old man as my client was relying on his father s opinion of me. What happened then was nothing short of a miracle to me.
His son said to him, "OK, Dad. What do you suggest?"
The old man said, "Well, son. It is simple. You need to use what you have to get what you want. Keep doing that and you will make progress." I thought, "What the heck does that mean? Is this guy nuts or what?"
The old man continued, "You are not taking advantage of what you already have... you don t need a consultant, you need to just make some old-fashioned marketing stew!" Then I knew the guy was nuts, but I had to just sit there. "When you were young son, your mom and I had very little money. So when we needed food, we mixed up what we had to make a meal."
"You have customers, you have prospects, you have products, and you can develop or acquire more products over time. Instead of doing what this young fellow is telling you, just ask the people you have what their needs are. When they tell you, supply it to them. If you don t have what they want, just partner with companies and people that do. Then supply your customers with what they want."
I later learned that this old man was a very successful businessman in his day and well known for his highly successful marketing methods. I took his advice to heart and restructured my thinking. I developed and still use all of the tools needed to "make marketing stew" and I owe it to this old guy.
In my opinion, Internet entrepreneurs should take a tip from this old man and use their business contacts, associates and customers to "make marketing stew".
It doesn t matter how many people are in your "sphere of influence" now. Just begin to learn how to uncover the "needs and wants" of those with whom you do business and your "stew" will happen.
Once you understand how to make "marketing stew", you will never be hungry again.
